Pickle Me Memories:
“My mother and grandmother made pickles in jars and in crocks. The crocks were in the basement but the dill and garlic could be smelled all over the house. They packed the pickles in the crock, added dill and garlic, and brine, and put a plate on top. Then they weighed it down with a very big rock! We would help ourselves to the pickles after that.”

“I remember making pickles when I was a little girl in the 1950s with my mom, my grandmother, and my aunt. We used to make them in my Grandma’s kitchen. My uncle used to buy 2 bushels of cukes and 1 bushel of green tomatoes at the Farmer’s Market. We used to scrub the sand off of the cucumbers. That was basically my job and I learned step-by-step what to do. It was definitely a family affair.”
