Recently, Mike Krueger shared the story of his family's tefillin, which have been passed down over generations.
"Tefillin have been worn by Jews since around 1st century A.D. However, the practice of binding your arm and placement between your eyes has been referenced in Deuteronomy 11:18 (V'Ahavta prayer) in a somewhat obscure way. The arm tefillah (shel yad) is placed on the upper arm and strapped around the arm, hand, and fingers. The head tefillah (shel rosh) is placed above the forehead. These particular tefillah belonged to my great grandfather, Ellya Kriger, who lived in Lyakhavichi, Belarus. He never came to America. However, my grandfather, Myer Krueger, Ellya's son, was given the tefillah when he came to America in 1901 via Liverpool, England, at the age of 14. He arrived in the United States and made his way to Michigan City, Indiana via Philadelphia. He became a citizen in 1914. My father, Marvin Krueger, received these tefillah from his father, Myer, and I received them from my father, Marvin."
